Cricket is a popular sport worldwide, but do you know how it started in Timor-Leste? The journey began in 2013, when cricket was first introduced in the country. Today, the sport is growing rapidly, with young players showing great interest in the game.
The Beginning of Cricket in Timor-Leste In 2013, Muhammad Tayyeb Javed introduced cricket in Timor-Leste. At the start, there was no proper equipment, so children played using a cardboard bat, a car tire as a wicket, and a simple tennis ball.
Key Milestones:
✔ 2013: Cricket was introduced under the “Cricket for All” program.
✔ 2014: Cricket Timor-Leste was officially registered as a Cricket Federation.
✔ 2015-2019: Organized 7 youth cricket festivals and 16 Cricket for Kids competitions.
✔ 2023-2024: Hosted the Dili International Cricket League and participated in the Bali Blast International Cricket League.
Challenges in the Growth of Cricket
🚧 Lack of Cricket Grounds: Timor-Leste does not have an official cricket ground, which is a major challenge for players.
🚧 Limited Cricket Equipment: Most players do not have access to proper cricket bats, balls, and kits.
🚧 Lack of Sponsorship & Funding: There is minimal financial support from the government and private organizations.
