History of Cricket Timor-Leste
The Journey of Muhammad Tayyeb Javed: The Founding Father of Cricket in Timor-Leste
Cricket in Timor-Leste has a remarkable story of resilience, passion, and dedication, all of which trace back to the relentless efforts of Muhammad Tayyeb Javed. From starting with handmade equipment to establishing a national cricket structure, his journey reflects the true spirit of sports development against all odds.
The Beginning: A Vision for Timor-Leste’s Cricket
In April 2013, Muhammad Tayyeb Javed witnessed something that changed his life forever. While passing by a playground, he saw local Timorese children being denied the opportunity to play by expat cricketers. This moment sparked a vision in him—to introduce and promote cricket among the Timorese people, making it accessible to everyone, regardless of their background.
With no infrastructure, no proper equipment, and no official recognition, he embarked on a mission to develop cricket in Timor-Leste from scratch.
Building from Nothing: The Early Challenges

Javed started with just three children, using a handmade bat from cardboard, a car tire as a wicket, and a tennis ball. This humble beginning marked the first step towards an incredible journey.
Knowing that a structured approach was necessary, he launched the ‘Cricket for All’ program at EBC Escola Farol. The response was overwhelming—54 boys and girls showed interest in learning the game. However, the lack of proper cricket gear became an immediate challenge.
Determined to continue, Javed, along with Jorge da Costa, handcrafted bats and wickets using available materials. The local enthusiasm for the sport grew rapidly, even though they had no official support.
Gaining Recognition: The First Steps Towards Legitimacy
Understanding the need for formal recognition, Javed worked tirelessly to complete all legal requirements for establishing cricket in the country. With his wife’s unwavering support, he successfully registered the cricket body with local sports organizations and the Ministry of Justice.
In 2014, he took a major step forward by traveling to Pakistan to bring basic cricket equipment. This initiative gave the young players their first real cricketing experience with proper bats, balls, and kits.
The same year, Cricket Timor-Leste officially became a legally recognized federation and the governing body for cricket in the country. This milestone set the foundation for structured cricket development.
Expanding Cricket: Competitions and Youth Development

From 2015 onwards, Javed focused on organizing tournaments and youth competitions to engage more players and attract public attention.
- 7 Youth Cricket Festivals were successfully conducted.
- 16 ‘Cricket for Kids’ competitions were held to introduce cricket to young talents.
These efforts brought recognition to the sport, and more children started participating in structured training sessions.
Challenges of the COVID-19 Era :(2020-2022)
Just as cricket was growing, the COVID-19 pandemic halted all activities between 2020 and 2022. However, Javed did not give up. Despite the pause, he continued strategizing and planning for the revival of cricket post-pandemic.
Cricket’s Revival: The Rise of Competitions (2023-2024)
After the pandemic restrictions were lifted, cricket in Timor-Leste saw a strong comeback:
- The Dili International Cricket League (2023, 2024) was successfully organized, attracting local and expat players.
- In July 2024, the Timor-Leste cricket team participated in the Bali Blast International Cricket League in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia.
These international events put Timor-Leste’s cricket on the global map, showcasing the potential of young Timorese cricketers.
Struggles with Funding and Infrastructure:
Despite the progress, cricket in Timor-Leste still lacks essential facilities and financial support. Some of the key challenges include:
- No proper cricket ground – The existing land needs development into a full cricket pitch.
- Lack of equipment – Current gear does not meet international standards.
- No financial support for players – Many talented players cannot afford to continue playing.
- No coaching and training staff – Limited resources restrict professional coaching.
Javed has personally funded most of the activities, and Mark Young from New Zealand has also contributed by sending used cricket equipment. However, the need for external donors and sponsors remains critical.
A Dream for the Future: The Need for a Cricket Ground

Javed envisions building Timor-Leste’s first dedicated cricket ground, complete with basic training facilities. The land is available, but funding is required for:
- Building a pitch
- Purchasing a roller and maintenance equipment
- Creating a practice facility for young cricketers
This step would provide a permanent home for cricket in Timor-Leste and allow for regular domestic and international competitions.
Conclusion: A Legacy in the Making
Through hard work, personal sacrifices, and an unbreakable spirit, Muhammad Tayyeb Javed has transformed cricket in Timor-Leste from an unknown sport to an officially recognized federation.
His journey is not just about cricket; it is about giving opportunities to young Timorese children, proving that passion and dedication can overcome any obstacle. With the right support, his vision for cricket in Timor-Leste can reach even greater heights.
